John Klein is based in Sarasota where he received a BA in Visual Studies from New College in 1973. As an alum, he spent years on the Board of Directors of its Alumni association and doing development work for the New College Foundation. John also studied in the Visual Anthropology Master’s Program of Temple University at the Anthropology Film Center in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He spent time studying at The New School for Social Research in NYC where he studied Communications and Psychobiology. The majority of John’s career has been spent in Network and Syndicated Television. He worked at the NBC Network in the News and Sports Departments as a Cameraman, Lighting Director, and Director of Photography. During his time at NBC, he shot a Peabody Award winning piece, won an Emmy for field news coverage, won an AP First place for News Photography and was on several crew Emmys for World Series and Super Bowl Coverage, as well as one for Studio Production for his work on Saturday Night Live. John returned to Sarasota in the ‘80s and now owns two Florida-based production companies, Yellowbird and JK Productions, both of which regularly produce programming for all of the major networks as well as national cable and IP programming. He currently resides in Sarasota with his fantastic wife, Jodie, a licensed clinical social worker and the mother of four completely cool children. John has had a lifelong connection and commitment to marine and coastal conservation issues, spending years doing turtle walks on Captiva Island and volunteering time for organizations like the National Estuaries Program. John is undiscerning in his unabashed love of animals, which ranges from the canine to the reptilian and even the occasional politician. As one of Sea to Shore Alliance’s newer board members, John is excited to join the team and help advance our mission and goals over the coming years.
